Main activities:The Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association, HELMEPA, established in 1982 by Greek seafarers and shipowners is a non profit making and non governmental voluntary organization. The aim is to spread a pollution prevention spirit and enhance maritime safety and security throughout the shipping industry through the information and motivation of the human element. Members are Greek-owned shipping companies, companies and organizations linked with Greek shipping from all over the world as well as over 15,000 Greek seafarers. The annual membership fees are Euros 1,150.00 per company and vessel. HELMEPA offers to Greek officers and staff of member vessels and companies annual Refresher Training Programs ashore and onboard. The syllabus is based on IMO's legislative developments, maritime accidents, feedback from participants and suggestions made by member-companies. In parallel, an environmental education program called HELMEPA Junior, is addressed to students 5-12 years old all over the country every year.
HELMEPA has helped the establishment of 6 other similar MEPAs in Australia (AUSMEPA), UK (BRITMEPA), Cyprus (CYMEPA), the Philippines (PHILMEPA), Turkey (TURMEPA) and Uruguay (URUMEPA).
Recently, these Associations have agreed and set up INTERMEPA, the International Marine Environment Protection Association, to be headquartered in Greece and served by HELMEPA's Secretariat. The aim is to create a synergy of all those concerned with the protection of the marine environment both within shipping and the land-based business sectors. |
